New Medicaid Numbers Issued On January 16, 2006 Sponsors Will Receive Notices
Because most Alabama Medicaid numbers contain the recipient’s Social Security number, Alabama Medicaid is required to change each recipient’s current Medicaid number to a randomly assigned number. On January 16, 2007 the Alabama Medicaid Agency will begin mailing notices of the new Medicaid number to each Medicaid recipient. For nursing home residents, this notice will go to the sponsor, not the nursing home (unless, of course the nursing home is the sponsor). It is important that you contact sponsors and ask that they bring or send a copy of the letter to your facility. Once you obtain the new number, you should begin using the new number on all future Medicaid billing. If you do not have the new number it will be possible, for a certain period of time, to file claims under the old number; however, the old number will eventually be phased out.
